Modeling Advice
Don’t believe everything you hear about modelling, exept the fact that it is very difficult to get started, and even harder not being ripped off along the way.
Getting into modelling is very very hard, and anything, which gives you an edge over all the other competition out there, has to be a good thing.
You can pay to have a professional photo shoot and a portfolio designed and printed, but you have to be careful.
Some companies pretend to be modelling agencies and charge you £800/$1600 for a photo shoot and then promise to get you work afterwards so that you can get your money back.
This NEVER happens. Modelling Agencies do not take money from you.
They earn their money only when they get you work, not before. Companies who pretend to be Modelling Agencies and charge you up front in this way are a rip-off.
The difficult thing is getting signed by a real modelling agency when you have no experience, or decent photographs of yourself.
You should go to a professional photographer to get good portfolio shots taken, you need a good variety of images from head shots to full length shots, in tight fitting outfits and perhaps swim ware or lingerie if you are a female model.
The shots should include professionally applied make up, but with a very natural look, because agencies want to see you, not layers of thick cloths and even worse, thick make up.
You are better with 8, 10 or 12 good quality photographic prints, than you are with loads of similar average shots taken by a friend, or worse still, taken by yourself on your mobile/cell phone!
All the shots on this page are from one of our clients Modelling Portfolios, we shot all these images on the same photo shoot and you will get a good idea from the photographs here what variety and quality is required in a model’s portfolio.
If anyone quotes you more than say £500 for a portfolio shoot you are more than likley being ripped off. All the photographs in the portfolio above here cost £299 and that included all the photography, a make up artist, editing and re-touching then printing and presenting in a portfolio along with each image ready for websites burnt to hi-res CD. So anyone asking for more than say £500 is definately trying it on.
Some so called Modelling Agencies don’t appear to be charging that much, but they wind you up after the shoot and sell you photographs at around £100 each, which would make the portfolio above cost you £1000, watch out for this scam, because it is hard to see it coming before hand. You must always ask what finished product you get for your money, before you even send a deposite to book your photo shoot or makeover, because it is too late trying to negociate
afterwards, that is when you get ripped off for the most money.
You can read more details here about our makeover and photo shoot packages by looking at this web page, http://lintonstudios.co.uk/photoshoot.html it shows you a case study of a full modelling photo shoot, and explains much more about our photographic studio, our photographer and make up artist.
Once you have got yourself a good portrait portfolio, that is when the hard work begins, finding an agency who will sign you, at the very least, you will have shown some commitment to your modelling career and gained valuable studio experience by commissioning your new portfolio.
Don't get ripped off remember, some 'Agencies' will charge far too much for a portfolio and because they have made a fortune out of you, they don't try to find any work for you, they just move on to the next punter. In truth they aren’t really a model agency.
Here are some more photographs we have taken for models portfolios, to help give you an idea of the type of shots you will need when you begin to create your own portfolio to get your career as a model started and you begin looking for your first job with a model agency.
